How
can I assure a proper turn in the backswing ?
As Moe Norman
and Ben Hogan did, build a "pre-turn" into your address position.
The "pre-turn" is a position taken at address, that allows
the golfer to make a perfect, flowing rotation in the backswing
and to maximize leverage (power, distance, trajectory). Good
balance is fundamental to this setup because the downswing that
follows is best described as a pulling action.
Here's
how to set up the "pre-turn" for a better turn and more leverage.
- Take
your normal address position with the clubhead between the
heels and the ball slightly forward of the clubhead (as
shown).
- Now
"pre-turn" your sternum, navel and head slightly behind
the clubhead. The triangle created by the shoulders and
pelvis should follow a little as well.
- The
left knee should turn in slightly toward the ball and right
knee, while your right hip should rotate toward the left
hip.
- Maintain
the two anchors throughout the swing - i.e. the head (which
must remain behind the ball) and the right heel (which must
remain planted on the ground as you swing through impact).
